"La Katrina and Miss New Orleans"

La Calavera Catrina is a Mexican folk-art character made famous by illustrator and cartoonist Jose Posada. When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, many people thought it was the city would die. La Catrina is now La Katrina, and she comes in a flood of water trying to steal the Fleur-de-Lis choker from around the neck of a beautiful woman, who I dub “Miss New Orleans” after the Luis Armstrong song. To me, the song is just as much about missing the city as thinking of the city as a lovely lady and what the Fleur-de-lis means to her and those that live there.
